The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aqueous copolymer dispersions by emulsion copolymerisation of N-substituted(meth)acrylamide derivatives of the acrylamidomethylbenzyl chloride type with butadiene and/or monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters and optionally further olefinically unsaturated monomers in aqueous medium, and to the use of the resultant aqueous polymer dispersions as binders for water-borne paints or in the dressing (finishing) of leather.
