The device for heating the passenger compartment or coolant circuit of a vehicle has a high-pressure expulsion pump (12) which is driven by the internal combustion engine (10). The pump feeds operating medium out of a container (13) to a pressure limiting valve in which the operating medium is heated up by throttling and the heat generated in this way is conducted away in a heat exchanger (17), for example into the coolant circuit or the passenger compartment. A magnet coupling (11) which can be switched as a function of temperature and/or engine speed is located between pump and internal combustion engine. If, for example, the desired temperature in the passenger compartment is reached, the high-pressure expulsion pump (12) is separated from the internal combustion engine by the coupling. In this way, a simple, energy-saving and very effective supplementary vehicle heating system is obtained.
