In a process for producing metallic coatings on a substrate, in which the substrate is fitted for fixing between a carrier disc and a cover disc, serving as a mask, of a device and provided on the surface sections not covered by the cover disc with at least one metallic layer, dimensionally stable coatings of any desired structure with a sharp edge contour are obtained in a surprisingly simple manner by using a device with components arranged in a fixed mutual position by means of magnetic force and with at least one component of soft-magnetic material, and introducing the substrate between the carrier disc and cover disc and fixing it by clamping it down. For this purpose, especially a device is provided in which the cover disc and carrier disc consist of a soft-magnetic material and at least two loosely placed, plate-shaped permanent magnets are arranged on the carrier disc surface facing the cover disc.
