1350261 Purifying sugar juices HITACHI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 Oct 1970] 25254/71 Heading C6B In a process for the production of plantationrefined sugar the juice extracted from the cane or other sugar-bearing raw material and heated to about 55‹C is subjected to a continuous carbonation process by being passed through a first carbonator in which milk of lime and CO 2 gas are added and then, after separation of calcium carbonate precipitate, through a second carbonator, followed by a heater which facilitates subsequent filtration to remove calcium carbonate. The juice is then decolorized by means of granular active carbon and subjected to further purification, i.e. decoloration, dechlorination and removal of salts and organic non-sugar material, by passage through a combination of ion-exchange apparatus comprising an electrodialysis membrane and cation and anion resin towers, and a succession of evaporators. In one embodiment, the juice leaving the ion exchange apparatus is passed through a monobed tower to complete the dechlorination and adjust the pH value to prevent subsequent inversion, and then through a heater and a succession of four evaporators followed by a vacuum pan and a centrifugal machine in which the molasses is separated. The refined sugar is then crystallized in a cooler and dryer and sieved and bagged. In an alternative arrangement only one evaporator is positioned as indicated above, three others being located immediately upstream of the ion exchange apparatus. |
