The invention relates to a process and composition for making smoke. The composition consists of a) a compound that reacts with water, with the evolution of heat, which compound may be e.g. an acid anhydride and preferably phosphorus pentoxide, b) at least one ammonium salt, and c) paraformaldehyde. Water is added to this composition, whereupon the ammonium salt dissociates, and gaseous ammonia is liberated, while the paraformaldehyde is decomposed into gaseous formaldehyde and water. The ammonium and the formaldehyde react with each other, giving hexamethylenetetramine in the form of white smoke. |
