Analgesic medicaments contain short chain fatty acids and/or hydroxylated fatty acids and/or ketonic fatty acids or esters of these cpds. Typical esters are butyric acid esters, such as glycerine tributyrate), beta-hydroxy-butyric acid esters and acetyl acetic acid esters. The medicaments are well tolerated and have no serious side effects. The esters are osmotically inactive and are particularly useful for intravascular injection. Clinical tests are described in which pain is relieved in cancer patients. Doses are 200-1000 mg per day. Difficultly soluble esters may be formulated with emulsifiers, such as lecithin or mixed triglycerides.
