Cyclic phosphonates of formula: <IMAGE> in which: A) either R" is a hydrogen and i) X is an oxygen, R' denotes a tert-butyl radical and A denotes a radical <IMAGE> or a radical <IMAGE> ii) or X denotes sulphur, R' is a hydrogen or a C1-18 alkyl or a radical derived from an alcohol ROH employed in the pyrethrinoid series and A is a carbon radical containing up to 18 C which joins two of the oxygen atoms bonded to phosphorus, or R" denotes a halogen, X is an oxygen, R' is a hydrogen or an alkyl optionally substituted by one or a number of identical or different functional groups, or a C6-14 aryl radical optionally substituted by one or more functional groups or a heterocyclic ring optionally substituted by one or more functional groups, and A is a carbon radical containing up to 18C which joins two of the oxygen atoms bonded to phosphorus, in all their possible isomeric forms. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of the compounds of formula I. The compounds of formula I can be employed in the synthesis of pyrethrinoid derivatives.
