The measuring head is seated in the wall of a container (15, 26, 17) and serves to measure the variation in the electric or magnetic field (18) emanating from it through the proximity of a material or object in the interior of the container. The measuring head has a front part with at least one field-generating electrode (1, 2) and a measuring electrode (3). The electrodes are connected to a measuring electronic system via shielded conductors (5, 6, 7). The measuring head is seated in a metal housing (8, 9) which surrounds the front part in which the electrodes are embedded in ceramic (4). The measuring head is provided towards the container interior with a dielectric window (19) through which the field emanating from the electrodes enters into the container interior. The conductors are led through a housing plate (11) in an insulated, pressure-resistant and thermostable fashion. <IMAGE>
