Method for optical time division multiplex transmission via an optical waveguide (opt) of a switching system with transmission-capable system devices (SC, SCs) which contain a control memory (SS, SSx) in whose memory spaces information is stored which indicates whether assigned time channels are occupied or not. Before the start of its transmission of control signals, the transmitting system device (SC), by means of its control memory (SS), selects a currently free time channel and seizes it and the system device (EC) designated for reception. The remaining transmission-capable system devices (SCx) also store this occupancy in their own control memory (SSx). Auxiliary devices (HC), also capable of transmission via the optical waveguide (opt) but without their own control memory (SS), are assigned to at least some of the transmission-capable system devices (SC, SCx). The auxiliary device (HC) co-uses the control memory (SS) of the assigned transmission-capable system device (SC) to check and seize time channels. The transmission-capable system device (SC) is in each case disposed spatially adjacent to its assigned auxiliary devices (HC), where the control memory (SS) is connected in each case via short lines (el1, el2, el4) to each of these adjacent assigned auxiliary devices (HC). <IMAGE>
