The application relates to a lockable glove compartment lid for motor vehicles, which has, arranged eccentrically on its side facing the driver, a locking cylinder and a handle flap, a rod which is rotatably mounted on the rear of the lid establishing an operative connection between the handle flap and a centrally arranged locking element. In order to permit the handle flap to roam freely when the locking cylinder is in the secured position, provision is made according to the invention for the rod to be axially displaceable, by rotation of the locking cylinder, in such a way that the rod is disengaged from the locking element in the secured position of the locking cylinder, the rod being rotatable by means of the handle flap in the secured position as well.
