The invention relates to a device for the secondary treatment in a filter of waste waters mechanically and/or biologically pretreated. The filter element according to the invention comprises a foamed material having open membrane-less pores and having a pore count of 10-80 ppi and, for cleaning, is mounted so as to be detachable as a whole from the vessel or compartment. The filter material is present in blocks or mats; it is inserted into a sieve cage or a guide frame, which is held by corresponding counterparts in the vessel. The frame preferably has an outlet pipe connection with which it is attached to the housing-side outlet port. The filter is suitable in particular as a replacement for soakaways used in scattered settlements or for the secondary treatment of waste waters containing slight traces of light liquids or surfactants.
