PURPOSE:To reduce or eliminate the color phase irregularity due to double refraction, by combining optical axes of crystalline plastic films of upper and lower substrates, the rubbing direction, and the axis of polarization of a polarizing plate in specific directions. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 2A and 2B having desired shapes are formed on inside faces of two biaxially stretched crystalline plastic films 1A and 1B, and they are subjected to the rubbing treatment by rubbing (whose direction is indicated by an arrow of double lines) in the same direction as optical axes (indicated by an arrow of broken lines) of the least optical rotatory power of films 1A and 1B. Films 1A and 1B are allowed to face each other so that their optical axes are orthogonal to each other, and their peripheral parts are sealed by a seal member 3, and a nematic liquid crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy is sealed up, thus forming a liquid crystal cell. Polarizing plates 5A and 5B are arranged on both faces of this liquid crystal cell so that optical axes and axes of polarization (indicated by an arrow of solid lines) are orthogonal to each other approximately. |
