A plastic dough is prepared, comprising a ceramic oxide powder, a thermoplastic material and an organic binder, the dough is extruded into a tubular shape (25), the tubular shape is wound into a helix around a rotary cylindrical mandrel (20), the raw helical tubular enclosure is separated from the mandrel and is subjected to a baking operation resulting in the combustion of the organic binder and of the thermoplastic material, and then to sintering. Applications to the manufacture of translucent tubes for high-pressure sodium vapour lamps and of discharge tubes for lasers.
