PRODUCTION OF ALUMINUM BODY HAVING SPONGE-LIKE FORM

PURPOSE:To obtain a titled Al body which maintains the reactivity approximate to the reactivity of fine powder and granules, is safe and is easy to handle by blowing pressurized gaseous flow at varying intensities to the fine falling stream of Al. CONSTITUTION:The molten Al metal in a graphite crucible 1 which is supported by a holding frame 3 and is kept at an adequate temp. is run downward as an adequate fine falling stream through an outflow cylinder 5 fixed in the hole part in the lower part of the crucible 1. Pressurized gaseous flow is blown to said fine flow from a transverse direction, more preferably from diagonally below with a pressurized gas injector 6 at the intensities varied by a rotary plate 7 for controlling flow rate. Then when the pressurized gaseous flow of large intensity collides vigorously against the fine stream of the molten metal, the molten metal while being cooled scatters as finely pulverized particles. When the pressurized gaseous flow of small intensity collides against the same, the molten metal scatters approximately in the state of the molten metal which bonds the finely pulverized particles to each other. An Al body having a sponge-like shape of small specific bulk density is obtd. by the repetition of such process.
