According to the invention an iron ore is chlorinated with the aid of a gas stream containing chlorine and air and optionally with ferric chloride vapours added, in a suitable reactor at a temperature of 700 to 1200 DEG C at a pressure of 1 to 5 atmospheres, the volatile chlorides of nonferrous metals being recovered from the fumes, sulphur dioxide being converted to sulphuric acid and the ash being leached to recover the iron in the form of sponge iron or in another form.
