In a lifting device having a stand (4), a lifting element (6) which is supported by the stand (4) so as to be raisable, a gas pressure spring (24), and a self-energised braking mechanism with brake shoes (60, 62), in which, in the normal state, the brake shoes (60, 62) are in contact with the lifting element and the lifting element (6) is connected non-positively to the stand (4), and in which a brake release pedal (48) is provided for releasing the brake shoe (60) of the braking mechanism from the lifting element (6), it can be ascertained reliably whether the gas pressure spring (24) has failed or not, in that a safety device has a first connecting rod (78), connected to the brake shoe (60), and a second connecting rod (90), connected to the brake release pedal (48), and a connecting element (84), the two connecting rods (78, 90) being attached swivellably and axially non-displaceably to the connecting element (84) via two axles (86, 88) arranged at a defined distance from one another, a weight (102) being connected to the connecting element (84), and it being possible for a torque to be exerted on the connecting element (84) by the weight (102), said torque being directed counter to the torque applied by a swivel movement of the connecting element (84) about the axle (86) on the first connecting rod (78) during movement of the second connecting rod (90) in the direction of brake release. <IMAGE>
