The title compd. I was prepd. by treatment of isomannide with an arenesulfonyl chloride or anhydried, followed by treatment of the resulting ester with a benzoic acid or its salt, and finally nitration and ester hydrolysis. Thus, isomannide was treated with 4-MeC6H4SO2Cl to give the 2-tosylate ester, whch was treated with KOBz to give isosorbide 2-benzoate. The latter was treated with HNO3-HOAc to give the 2-benzoate-5-nitrate ester, which was treated with KOH-EtOH to give I (49.4% based on isomannide).
