The invention relates to a material for dry, asbestos-free friction material or friction elements which contains a binder, staple glass fibre and fibre pulp made from an aromatic polyamide. The invention furthermore relates to a process for the preparation of the material and the friction elements. The friction elements are characterised by surprisingly good fracture resistance. Preforms made of the material are unusually homogeneous and are easy to handle.
