Arranged in the collet (3) of a main spindle (1) of a vertical lathe is a stop sleeve (7) which can be adjusted by rotating a threaded spindle (8) guided coaxially to the main spindle (1). To adjust the stop sleeve (7), the threaded spindle (8) can be coupled to the machine frame (13), whereas it otherwise revolves with the main spindle (1). <IMAGE>
