Tensioner for a safety-belt system for motor vehicles. Safety-belt tensioners are intended to execute the tensioning movement in an extremely short time. In known tensioners, for this there is a pyrotechnic drive system which is expensive and which involves a high outlay. According to the invention, a tensioner is substantially improved in that a tensioning element which is movable along a predetermined path of movement transversely relative to the longitudinal direction of the belt band and which thereby deflects the belt band in a loop-like manner is provided and is movable by means of spring force from a position of rest remote from the belt band into the deflecting position. <IMAGE>
