For determining the degree of filling of a reel (S1), in particular a reel on which a magnetic tape (MB) is wound up, the number of revolutions of the reel (S1) during a period of time and the number of revolutions during this period of time of a roller (R1) in effective connection with the magnetic tape (MB) are measured. Subsequently, the quotient of the number of revolutions of the roller (R1) and the number of revolutions of the reel (S1) is determined, which represents a measure of the degree of filling. By using a read-only memory (FS), the required torque and the motor current of a drive motor driving the reel (S1) are determined from the quotient. <IMAGE>
