The device includes a hollow shaft which may be rotated by a motor. At the end near the ingot the shaft carries the head provided with scrapers. The head is pivoted on the end of the shaft by a joint. Steps limit the amount of rotation of the head. - On the back of the pivoting block is an inclined surface on which a rod presses. The rod extends inside the hollow shaft, and has its second end against a coil spring in the shaft. An adjustment allows the pressure of the spring to be adjusted, against a fixed stop. The components which guide the rod all have holes in them to allow the circulation of a cooling fluid. The device is used to clean the surface of a continuously produced not metal ingot in order to allow an accurate measurement of its temperature.
