A nematic liquid crytalline compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the general formula compounds represented by the general formula compounds represented by the general formula and compounds represented by the general formula wherein R and R', independently from each other, represent a linear alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, and each cyclohexane ring is arranged in a trans(equatorial-equatorial) form. These compounds have higher nematic phaseisotropic liquid phase transition temperatures than conventional liquid crystalline compounds.
