The method for producing a piston ring includes the operation of producing a ring blank (10), of which the diameter of the external peripheral surface is greater and the diameter of the internal peripheral surface is less than those of the finished ring. Two holes are next pierced in the segment blank (10) and two parallel pegs (51), placed at a defined distance from each other, are extended from a retracted position, in which they are aligned with the axes of the respective holes and in which they do not interact with the ring blank (10), into an extended position in which they are engaged in the pierced holes in order to place the ring blank (10) into a state in which it is not subjected to any external force. A slit is cut in the ring blank (10), either before or after the piercing operation, in order to produce two free ends, the position of the holes being such that each hole is adjacent to an associated free end. The distance separating the pegs (51) is decreased in order to bring the ring blank (10) into a closed position. Finally, one or more ring blanks (10) are clamped in the closed position and their internal and external peripheral surfaces are machined so as to be circular. <IMAGE>
