PURPOSE:To extract an oily substance effectively from an algal body without carrying out the drying nor mechanical grinding, by keeping a diatom at a specific temperature, and autolyzing the cell wall and cell membrane of the algal body. CONSTITUTION:An algal body of a diatom is concentrated by natural setting of centrifuging and wahsed with water to form a suspension of a suitable concentration. The pH thereof is then adjusted to a weakly acidic value, and preferably kept at 30-40 deg.C for 3-15 days while suitably shaken to autolyze the cell wall and cell membrane of the algal body. An oily substance in the algal body is then extracted with a water-incompatible solvent, e.g. kerosine or petroleum ether. |
