NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 8-24C saturated or unsaturated straight or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbon group). EXAMPLE:3-O-methyl branched-isostearyl-D-mannitol. USE:It has high chemical stability and surface active property, and low irritation to the skin, and is useful as an emulsifier, lubricant (emollient), self-emulsifiable lubricant, wetting agent, and thickener, and especially useful as a component of cosmetics. PROCESS:The compound of formula I can be prepared by (1) reacting D-mannitol of formula II with acetone to obtain 1,2,5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-mannitol having four protected OH groups and two free OH groups at 3 and 4 positions, (2) etherifying the compound of formula III in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst (e.g. quaternary onium salt), (3) distilling the resultant reaction product to separate monoalkyl ether from dialkyl ether, and (4) removing the protecting groups from the product. |
