PURPOSE:To reduce the leakage of current through the resistance of electrolyte itself by selecting the mean sectional area of a main path for anolyte and the ratio of the length of a branching path introduced into each cell unit to the mean sectional area of the branching path so that they satisfy a specified formula. CONSTITUTION:A unit cell 1 is constituted of a fuel electrode 2a, and oxidant electrode 2b, an electrolyte chamber 3, a fuel chamber 5 which supplies mixture liquid consisting of electrolyte and fuel, and an oxidant chamber 7. A fuel cell is constituted by stacking a plural number of thus constituted unit cells 1. Here, the mean sectional area (S) of a main path for anolyte and the ratio (P) of the length of a branching path introduced into each unti cell 1 to the mean sectional area of the above branching path, are selected so that the formula, 2p+E/eX L/S >=10E/rhoI, is satisfied (E represents the voltage of the fuel cell; I represents its current; e represents the voltage of the unit cell 1; L represents the mean width dimension in the stacked direction; and rho represents the specific resistance of anolyte). As a result, the efficiency of the fuel cell can be enhanced by reducing loss caused by the leakage of current through the electrode itself. |
