PURPOSE:To prevent the elasticity of a gasket from being reduced due to temperature variations or the like and to maintain the sealing property of the gasket, by a method wherein a gasket is formed from a shape memory alloy so that it is expanded in a temperature range higher than the shape memory temperature thereof and is contracted in a temperature range lower than the shape memory temperature. CONSTITUTION:A gasket 1 obtained by bending a plate material of a shape memory alloy is an annular body having a U-shaped cross sectional form opened in the radially outward direction, and is so set that the width thereof in the axial direction becomes larger than the depth of a fitting groove 5 as indicated by broken lines in a temperature range higher than the shape memory temperature thereof and becomes smaller than the depth of the groove 5 as indicated by dotted lines in a temperature range lower than the shape memory temperature. Accordingly, when an operating temperature in the higher temperature range is attained, the gasket 1 tends to be enlarged in the axial width through the change from the broken-line condition to the dotted-line condition, so that it is pressed between the bottom surface of the groove 5 formed in one member 2 and the other member 3, thereby providing a sealing action between the members 2, 3. |
