The calcination of phosphate ores, especially of carbonaceous ores. With the aim of facilitating, during calcination, the removal of organic matter from the combination of the residual carbon and sulphides with the oxygen of the treatment gas, the ore to be calcined is crushed so that the dimensions of its grains are less than 100 microns and that 80 % of the grains pass through a sieve with a mesh of 40 to 90 microns.
