The lateral canopy carrier structure for any road or rail vehicle comprises a floor frame 1 and a roof 6 which are connected to one another by means of endpieces 4 and which delimit lateral orifices normally closed by longitudinally foldable canopies 7 suspended on rails 21 of lateral beams 13 belonging to the roof. According to the invention, each lateral beam 13 is extended as far as the middle beam 12 of the roof 6 by at least one carrier element, such as arms 14, a box or the like, mounted pivotably relative to this middle beam about a longitudinal axis 15 and capable of being raised to a high position, in which the rail extends substantially level with the underside of the said middle beam, and of being lowered to a low gauge position, in which the rail extends to the upper level which does not affect the gauge. <IMAGE>
