A process and an apparatus for distilling utility water from feed salt water comprises a salt water evaporator (2) to produce a vapour, a vapour compressor (3), which receives vapour from the salt water evaporator and compresses this vapour, and a vapour condenser in the evaporator which receives the compressed vapour the salt water being evaporated when it is passed via the vapour condenser into the salt water evaporator. The salt water evaporator (2) includes an inlet pipe (6) for the feed salt water and outlet pipes for the removal of the output products from the salt water evaporator (2), the outlet products including utility water and concentrated salt water. A heat pump (5) comprises a pump evaporator (3) and a pump condenser (10), which are in heat exchange with at least one of the outlet pipes (16) and with the salt water evaporator (2) in order to pump heat from the outlet product to the salt water evaporator. …<IMAGE>… |
