An apparatus is proposed, which serves for feeding in particular roundwood to sawmill machines and has a driven endless chain transporter on which the wood rests, and a plurality of clamping-element pairs arranged along the endless chain transporter at intervals and acting laterally on the wood in order to centre the latter on the processing machine. In the known apparatuses, the clamping-element pairs are fixedly arranged, and the wood moves relative to them, with the result that it is not reliably secured even against rotation. Moreover, it is not possible to break up the wood continuously. These deficiencies are eliminated with the invention by the fact that a clamping-element pair (5) is arranged on a rail-borne lockable carriage (8) with its own travelling gear and is freely movable, in terms of height, on the latter with clamping elements (5a, 5b) coupled for positive comovement in the vertical direction.
