In order greatly to reduce the energy requirement and the actual operating time of the compressor in an appliance for cooling liquid consisting of an evaporator, compressor and condenser, the invention provides that the liquid to be cooled can be supplied by a switching device to the evaporator input either directly or via an air-cooled liquid cooler, that, when the ambient temperature falls below the temperature of the liquid to be cooled, the switching device can be changed over by means of a first control device from the direct supply of the liquid to be cooled to the supply via the liquid cooler, and that, by means of a second control device and in dependence on the temperature of the cooled liquid, the switching on and off of the compressor is controllable and the switching device can be operated as a volume controlling valve.
