PURPOSE:To obtain an ortho alkyl- or aralkyl-substituted phenol, by reacting a phenol with an aldehyde or ketone using a catalyst consisting essentially of iron oxide in the presence of hydrogen, by replacing directly the ortho position of the phenol in a selective way. CONSTITUTION:A phenol (e.g., phenol, etc.) having at least one unsubstituted ortho position is reacted with an aldehyde or ketone (e.g., benzaldehyde, acetophenone, acetone, etc.) shown by the formula I (R<1> is H, alkyl, or aryl; R<2> is alkyl, or aryl) using a catalyst (e.g., catalyst cnsisting of single component of iron oxide, a binary-based catalyst consisting of a metal oxide such as iron oxide, gallium oxide, etc. and the second catalytic component, etc.) consisting essentially of iron oxide in the presence of hydrogen preferably at about 300- 400 deg.C under heating, to give an ortho alkyl-substituted phenol (e.g., isopropyl phenol, etc.) or ortho aralkyl-substituted phenol shown by the formula II (R<3>- R<6> are H, halogen, or hydrocarbon). |
