Conventional cup springs require centring guides if a plurality of springs are placed in series. The invention dispenses with guides of this kind since they are formed integrally as self-centring seats on the conical parts of the cups. Tests have shown that elements of this kind with a conical ring stage can also be used to provide new types of unit through which fluid flows. Accordingly, use is made of ring elements containing conical parts in order to form a working chamber through which fluid flows and which can be used, in particular, as a pumping chamber or motor chamber, within the conical part and, if required, also in the middle of the ring. The chamber is assigned inlet means and outlet means and a drive arrangement for compressing and relieving the conical part of the element is furthermore provided. It is possible to have the drive arrangement run under lubricant and to provide it with hydrostatic bearings, while the chamber can also be operated with non-lubricating fluids such as, for example, water or gas. In tests so far pressures of over one thousand bar have been achieved in the working chamber with good efficiencies. It is assumed that it might also be possible on the basis of the invention to operate internal combustion engines at higher pressures or with better efficiencies.
