The invention relates to a process for the cleaning of textile material impregnated with an aqueous solution or emulsion of impurities, in which process the textile material is treated with an organic solvent by spraying or/and dipping. In order to remove from the textile material even very fine residual amounts of impurities, the invention intends first to spray the textile material during a first period with emulsifier-free solvent and then to treat it during a subsequent period with emulsifier-containing solvent. An apparatus for carrying out the process comprises, in addition to a solvent spraying unit (3, 9, 13) known per se, a further, additional solvent treatment unit (29, 30, 33), in which the textile material is dipped into an emulsifier-containing solvent liquor. <IMAGE>
