A piston ring is arranged in such a way in an annular groove of a piston, in particular a piston of an internal combustion engine, that it rests under prestress against the opposite side walls of the annular groove. To prevent oil passing from the crank case to the combustion space, the piston ring is a plain or tapered compression ring known per se, in the form of a cup spring.
