A method of germination and sustaining growth of orchid seeds which contain a plant embryo without any food or nutrient source comprises using a fungal growth in vitro isolated by taking a culture from a mature orchid plant and nurturing it in a nutrient agar medium containing a soluble carbohydrate and suitable for growth of both the fungus and the orchid, and - preparing the agar medium by adding the carbohydrate in powder form in the proportion of about 3.5 gm/litre to 8 to 10 gm/litre of the nutrient agar, - adding a refining compound (e.g. sucrose) in the proportion of not more than 6% of the total dissolved solids, - adding a yeast extract in the proportion of about 0.1 gm/litre, and - optionally adding to the nutrient a growth supplement in the proportion of about 0.1 to 0.5 gm/litre, further characterised by maintaining selected temperature conditions optionally simulating day and night fluctuations. |
