A method of and apparatus for making disc brake pads and like products comprises producing a continuous flow of a ribbon-like blended but uncured hydrocarbon cold forming friction formulation (24), pressing or stamping out (at 34) form-retaining shaped disc brake pads or preforms (36) from the ribbon-like formulation, and curing the preforms in an oven (42) at an appropriate temperature for several hours. Featured is the recovery of uncut trimmings and reincorporation in the uncured hydrocarbon cold forming friction formulation for recycling, the fabrication of composite brake pads or preforms in which metal components useful for installation purposes are incorporated in the preforms while still uncured, and the production of disc brake pads or other preforms in a continuous manner by automatic machinery.
