1301249 Riveting ATELIERS DE LA HAUTE - GARONNE ETABS AURIOL & CIE 22 June 1971 [23 June 1970] 29294/71 Heading B3U [Also in Division F2] In a method of riveting, a rivet is utilized which may be of titanium or titanium alloy and which comprises a head 12 and a frustoconical portion 13 adjacent to the head, the frusto-conical portion converging away from the head in such a manner that the degree of convergence is between 1% and 15% and that the ratio of the larger diameter D to the smaller diameter d of the frusto-conical portion is equal to or lies between the values 1À05 and 1À25. The rivet may be further provided with a cylindrical shank portion 14 extending away from and of the same diameter d as the smaller end of the frusto-conical portion. In use, the rivet is inserted in a cylindrical hole formed in a plurality of aluminium alloy sheets and subsequently deformed so that a further head is formed by the shank portion extending through the hole, the result being that axially of the rivet from the head ends thereof progressively decreasing compressive forces are set up in the sheets. |
