Carbon fibre reinforcing fabric - with carbon fibres gimped with synthetic or natural fibres

The fabric is pref. woven and has pref. 8 wefts/cm. of carbon fibre yarns (e.g. PAN based carbon filament tow) which are gimped by natural or synthetic yarns (polyhexamethylene adipamide) pref. at a twist level of 300 turns/m. Several layers of fabric are laminated with an epoxy resin such that the fabric layers form 67 vol.% of the final structure. The fabric is used for reinforcing resin-based aircraft parts. Gimping the carbon fibres ensures that they are maintained in parallel relationship and reduces possible damage, thereby increasing the strength of the final structure.
