<p>Polymsn. of omega-lactams, partic. alpha-pyrrolidone, is carried out in the present of a quat. ammonium halide and an alkali lactinate, or their reaction prods. formed in situ, introduced together into the reaction medium, contg. the monomer, held at 20-80 degrees C pref. 25-60 degrees C. The quat. ammonium halide has the formula (NR3R1)+X- in which R is an alkyl gp. of 1-3C and R1 is the same or is phenyl or benzyl, and X is Cl, Br or I; pref. tetramethyl-, tetraethyl or tetrapropyl-ammonium halides. The proportion of quat. salt and lactinate are 0.1-15 mole % of the monomer. The process gives a high degree of polymsn. and is used for making Nylon 4.</p> |
