In the serial/parallel conversion of digital signals, a regeneration of the word timing is required. It is very difficult to achieve this at high data rates. In the method according to the invention, a word timing is first extracted which has the required frequency but not an unambiguous correlation with the individual data words of the serial signal. This correlation is established after synchronisation words have been evaluated in the parallel domain.
