Preferably an inert carrier gas such as nitrogen is present. The treatment is for an hour or less. Sulphuryl fluoride-which is present in the reaction mixture-may be used instead of SO 2 with the same effects. Polymers treated in the examples are nylon 6, nylon 6,6, polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyurethane and "Acrylan" (Registered Trade Mark). It is believed that the treatment results in some chain scission with carboxylate formation and the incorporation of -SO 2 F groups. Examples 13 and 14 disclose the treatment of polyethylene film. |
