1308333 Chipping and sawing machine KOCKUM SODERHAMN AB 5 March 1970 [5 March 1969] 10591/70 Heading B5L A chipping and sawing machine comprises a frame, chipping members 11, 12 rotatably journalled in the frame for cutting the side portions of a log into chips while making two opposite sides of the log phane and parallel to each other, sawing members 14, 15 for sawing at least one board from each side of the reduced log, and driving means for the cutting and sawing members respectively. The members 11, 12 are truncated cones which have their smaller ends facing each other and are rotatable about an axis transverse to a longitudinal axis of said log, and the members each have a plurality of knife members spaced axially and radially. Each knife member has a first edge disposed to cut in a first plane parallel to the grain of the log and a second edge merging with the first edge and disposed in a second plane intersecting the first plane to cut across the grain. The sawing members 14, 15 are closely spaced behind the chipping members 11, 12 in the direction of log movement so that the log is guided by the chipping members during sawing and does not warp, twist or bend before sawing in consequence of the variations in the inner tensions of the log caused by the chipping operation. As described the members 11, 12 are adjustably spaced and driven in synchronism. Each knife member thereon may have guide surfaces for guiding the log, and openings may be provided adjacent each knife member to receive and pass through chips cut from the log. Guides 23, 24 may be provided between the members 11, 12 and the sawing members 14, 15 and the log may be fed by a conveyer 13. The members 14, 15 which may be band or frame saw blades are adjustably spaced, and further sawing members 18, 19 may be provided.
