Portable analyser with ion-selective electrodes

The liq. specimen is fed into the upright inlet of a horizontal capillary tube of square cross-section with facing apertures in its walls. The lower apertures are sealed by plugs of porous material in contact with electrolyte in a container below, with a reference electrode immersed at the inlet end. Through each upper aperture projects an ion-selective electrode. The specimen is drawn by plunger-controlled terminal suction as continuous flow or isolated amts. through the capillary, with presence across facing apertures detected by contacts adjacent each electrode, whereupon suction is interrupted during analysis using an external circuit. Used esp. for analysis of natural waters or gases associated with mineral deposits to establish whether further investigation is justified. Analyser can operate while being transported, and the capillary tube may be serpentine with multiple apertures for electrodes related to possible components.
