The invention relates to a method and device making it possible to determine the colour of the oxide covering a glass-metal sealing wire known by the designation "Dumet" wire. According to the invention, the method making it possible to achieve this purpose consists in taking off a sample 21 of the wire covered by oxide, arranging the latter in a chemical retort 7 containing a standard mercury battery 25 and an electrolyte 19, observing the time required to modify the output voltage of the battery, which is a function of the electrolytic reduction of the oxide, comparing this time with the corresponding times established on the basis of the colours according to the ATSM standard.
