A nuclear reactor installation which is arranged in a reactor containment building may contain a plurality of steel reactor pressure containers each having a high-temperature reactor and having heat-exchanging apparatuses, or a reinforced-concrete pressure container having a high-temperature reactor and apparatuses which likewise exchange heat. In order to be independent of active devices such as circulating fans during afterheat removal operation, the heat-exchanging apparatuses of each pressure container comprise at least one main heat exchanger and one or more internal afterheat exchangers, and each of the internal afterheat exchangers is interconnected via connecting lines to an external afterheat exchanger, which is arranged geodetically higher, to form a thermo-siphon cooling circuit. The external afterheat exchangers are arranged on the outer surface of the reactor containment building such that they are protected against external influences. The installation having a plurality of steel reactor pressure containers has another redundant device for afterheat extraction, which device consists of secondary afterheat exchangers which are installed in recesses in the biological shield and are connected to the outside air.
