The invention relates to a method, a device and a sticker for checking rented video cassettes for unauthorised opening, in which two housing parts enclosing the magnetic tape reels of the video cassette are bridged along part of their butt joint by means of a sticker which is applied in a forgery-proof way and has strips which have defined characteristics and run transversely with respect to the gap, which strips are checked for intactness or falsification by means of an electronic checking circuit by the passing movement of a scanning device connecting these strips to the checking circuit.
