A method of heating electrochromic or liquid crystal devices comprises supplying an A.C. heating current in addition to the D.C. voltage needed to operate the device, the frequency of the A.C. current being such as not to disturb the operation of the device. Preferably the heating current is supplied to the two flat operating electrodes (12,13) of the device.
